Ask Why
- What should you evaluate about the anser of a student ?
It is not the correctness of the answer, but the way of thinking, or the logical reasoning, through which the student deduced the answer.
What generates an answer and solves a problem is a way of thinking. Therefore the most important is the way of thinking.
Thus, always react to the answer of a student with "why?"
And remember to let the students discuss among them on the logical reasoning of a student before you show your evaluation.
- Asking "why ?" to students is good both for students and for the teacher.
"Why ?" is asked not only to students but also to the teacher him/herself. Indeed, without being able to answer "why ?" by him/herself, he/she cannot ask "why ?" to students.
You can answer to "why ?" only if you understands the subject well. Thus, by introducing this method of instruction, the teacher becomes obliged to keep improving his knowledge/ability about mathematics. This result is the improvement of the quality of teachers.
